Your donations make a life-changing difference in the lives of women who may have never known kindness and respect until they came to House of Ruth. Government funding to help these women is scarce, and we rely heavily on private support to fund our residential programs. House of Ruth began as a shelter for women experiencing houselessness in 1976; at that time, it was the only shelter dedicated to serving women in D.C. It quickly became clear that many women were in need of more than just a meal and a bed. LAHR provides advocacy with restraining orders along with support for families who have open court cases, most of which are with the Department of Children Services. Our Case Managers advocate for the family on all levels as well as attend all court appearances to offer stability and support.

House of Ruth, Washington, D.C.

House of Ruth Maryland was founded in May of 1977 by a coalition of women’s organizations, religious groups, service providers, and elected officials to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and their children. In November of 1977 we opened Baltimore’s first crisis shelter for these victims in a row house on North Calvert Street. The shelter was staffed by one paid staffed person and a voluntary Board of Directors. The shelter has twenty-three bright spacious, private bedrooms with baths and a large dining room and kitchen.

The 4 Best Bug Repellents of 2024 Reviews by Wirecutter

If you're an animal lover, you likely have pet food in your house. Unfortunately, this can also be a big attraction for all kinds of pests. Besides the typical ants, roaches, and flies, other insects, like beetles, weevils, and even moths, are commonly found around pet food.

It comes out quickly and is easy to apply, but since it tends to concentrate in one area you might need to rub it in with your hands. As well as killing bugs, organic-based sprays are better for the environment as they break down in the soil quicker and are safe for use around children and pets. A bug spray that is packaged in an aerosol spray is a very good choice for pest control as it offers you a twofold approach to bug extermination.

Chemical-based Bug Sprays

If you have any tubs or buckets holding water inside or outside of your house, dump them out. Inspect your yard for anything that catches and holds rainwater to prevent the bugs from congregating around the outside of the home before making their way inside. It just takes a few drips from a leaky faucet or toilet to provide a water source for these creatures. If any areas of your home are often humid, setting up a dehumidifier would also be a good idea. Taking it one step further, avoid having firewood on the ground, as it will reduce the probability of pests hiding within. You can keep firewood on top of pallets to allow air circulation under it, or something similar that will serve the same purpose.

Cutter Unscented Insect Repellent

The natural powders, like diatomaceous earth, work by damaging the insects’ exoskeletons as they roam around your home. On the other hand, dust laced with insecticides, rapidly attacks the insect’s nervous system and quickly kills any insect that wanders into the area. We do wish that the product was offered in a smaller, more portable container.

The blooms act as a powerful insect repellent that deters mosquitos, fleas, flies, moths, and ants, says Pavlich. Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum) are colorful flowers that can attract beneficial insects like bees and butterflies to the garden, says Spoonemore. In addition to attracting beneficial pests, the plant can also deter whiteflies, squash bugs, and cucumber beetles. "With trailing growth habits, nasturtiums are great for containers," says Spoonemore.

These products often have a warning label advising they be kept out of reach of children. While most are not directly toxic, they can be irritating if sprayed in eyes or airways. Another pick from Ranger Ready, this orange-scented bug spray also comes in a 3.4-ounce bottle and fits within TSA regulations for carry-on luggage. Its Ranger Orange scent includes base notes of Bergamot combined with natural orange, according to the company, with a non-greasy and quick-dry formula that won’t damage gear or clothing. Containing no DEET, you can expect 12 hours of protection from ticks and mosquitoes, as well as eight hours of protection from gnats, flies, fleas, chiggers and no-see-ums, the company claims. The product label for a bug spray will tell you the active ingredient in the formula and what percentage is contained in the formula.

"Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrum, a natural insect repellent commonly used in insecticides," says Spoonemore. Their daisy-like blooms repel ants, cockroaches, ticks, fleas, bedbugs, and Japanese beetles. From tomato hornworms and mites to aphids and beetles, bugs can be a major nuisance in the garden. But rather than treating them with chemical pesticides, you can deter unwanted pests from disturbing your garden by growing plants that naturally repel bugs. Many plants have special properties, like a strong scent or compounds, that are unappealing to common garden pests. Growing them in your garden acts as a natural pesticide while adding beauty and fragrance to your yard.

A more precise nozzle with a lighter spray pattern would make the product easier to use, especially if you’re applying it to yourself. Bug spray smells good (relatively, for bug spray), but bear in mind it will leave a slight white residue when sprayed on your clothes (however, that washes out just fine). What's more, DEET is destructive to synthetic fibers so avoid spraying on anything other than a natural fiber, like cotton. During our testing, we wished there was a way to cap or put a lid over the spray hole. Without a cap, we worried this product was going to leak in our bag. We also thought it had a strong chemical smell that was unpleasant to breathe in.

While minimizing the level of active ingredients will be a key issue for some people, it’s also a good idea to check the manufacturer’s rating for time of effectiveness. An outdoor bug spray that is rated as effective for 4 hours will frequently have a lower percentage of active ingredient than one rated for 8 hours, but this isn’t always the case. Many times, effectiveness is shorter for ticks than for mosquitoes. Its eco-friendly formula is safe for clothes, gear (like toys, water bottles and backpacks) and synthetics, and is safe for children over 2 months old and those who are breastfeeding. Formulated with 20 percent picaridin, we used this unscented bug repellent when spending several hours at a time outside.

We love that this bug spray is unscented and doesn’t have a chemical smell. Credit DEET, which accounts for 25% of the formula, with the repelling power of this aerosol spray. Meuti calls it one of the most effective mosquito repellents on the market, and that's been the experience with testers who have taken it into deep into nature and onto some of the buggiest golf courses around. In addition to the simplicity and effectiveness of the E55, our experts like Thermacell's claim that its repellent uses EPA-reviewed pyrethroid as its active ingredient. Replacement fills are fairly affordable, costing about $20 for 40 hours of protection — good for plenty of hot summer nights.

One bottle costs as much as one or two gallons of ready-mixed sprays. By supplying your own water and pesticide sprayer, you save a ton of money in the long run. After use, you should wash treated skin with soap and water, per the product’s directions. Active Insect Repellent is a reliable and cost-effective solution for anyone who wants to enjoy the great outdoors without worrying about pesky insects.

It does come in lotion form, so it’s similar to applying sunscreen. The lotion is unscented, although we noticed faint citrus notes very briefly during application. We love that this bug spray protects against a variety of insects including mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers. All-natural bug spray is now widely available, with formulas often based on oil of lemon eucalyptus. Many contain distilled water and a small amount of ethanol derived from corn or other plants.

The brand touts its quick-drying, plant-based formula and its repellants didn't leave behind any oily residue in our initial tests. That's good for sporty types who don't want to worry about a golf club or tennis racket flying out of their hands. While bug sprays can control existing insects in your home and those that seek to enter your private domain, here are some tips for using a bug spray and to keep your home free from crawling and flying bugs.

It protects against mosquitoes for up to eight hours and has a fantastic track record of preventing bug bites. Take note, however, that the Trek sprays leave behind a rather intense scent, so they're not ideal for indoor use. And since the essential oils they contain can cause allergies in some people, our experts recommend patch-testing a small area of your skin before applying the spray more widely over your body. This bug spray is backed by MDX Concepts 100% Money-Back Guarantee, so you can try the spray risk-free for 60 days and if you are not completely satisfied, MDX Concepts will refund your purchase.

Essentria IC3 has proven effective when applied directly to insects, though in the field essential oils are not as powerful as synthetic insecticides. For instance, some insecticides have very high aquatic toxicity — killing everything from fish to tiny invertebrates in aquatic ecosystems. If you live near a river, drainage, or other body of water, be mindful of the toxicity of the active ingredients in your home pest control products. Insect repellents are usually applied with a pump sprayer, aerosol can, or lotion. Active Insect Repellent gives you a mist of product that quickly and easily covers your arms, legs, or torso. You’ll probably need to take a different approach if you want to use it on other areas of your body.

Bug spray Insect & Pest Control

The amount of time coverage may last varies depending on the type of bug spray you’re using. Many products protect against mosquitoes, ticks and other pests for up to 12 hours. Lotion-based products tend to have a longer working period; however, outside factors such as rubbing with clothing, sweat and water contact ultimately impact the potency and length of the product. Bug bites aren’t just uncomfortable, in some areas, they can potentially spread diseases ranging from Zika to the West Nile virus.

Gasoline-smelling pesticides typically contain petroleum distillates or other hydrocarbon-based ingredients that can be highly flammable and potentially harmful to humans and animals if not used properly. Some of the most common active ingredients in these products include 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), dicamba, and triclopyr. When selecting a pesticide that smells like gasoline, it is important to read the product label carefully to choose one that is appropriate for the intended use site and pest problem. Plus, plants look and smell lovely, adding instant ambiance to any room you put them in.

Compared with other pump sprays, the Sawyer offers the most even cloud of repellent. The majority of the others we tested were too wet, and some even spat out little puddles, leaving thick droplets on the skin. Getting even coverage on an arm or a leg was easiest with the Sawyer repellent—aerosol sprays are much harder to control and result in a lot more overspray. They also make it difficult to spray areas near the face, like the shoulders. Mosquitoes and ticks pose a much bigger threat than just being incredibly annoying.

After 5 minutes, the subjects withdraw their arms, then repeat the process by placing their arms into a second pair of cages of disease-free mosquitoes of a different species for another 5 minutes. The subjects then walk around for about 10 minutes to stimulate sweating. That’s to mimic a real-world situation in which users might exercise while wearing repellent. We did not test for efficacy of the individual repellents, for a few reasons.

How do I choose the right general-use insecticide for my home?

The 12-ounce pump-action bottle is enough for two outfits and additional gear; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a dosage of 4.5 ounces per outfit. Choosing a single best bug spray overall was always going to be challenging, but there is a lot to like about the Sawyer Products 20 Percent Picaridin Insect Repellent. Long-term effectiveness is as good as anything on the market for both mosquitoes and ticks, and it successfully deters a wide range of flies and chiggers. It is safe to use on clothing and won’t damage plastics or synthetic finishes like DEET can.

It uses geraniol and lemongrass oil, which are bio-insecticides that don't need to be registered with the EPA, to kill gnats on contact. Though safe around people and pets, don't allow the spray to come into contact with eyes or skin, and the flammable liquid should never be used near electrical wiring. In that time, we’ve become an industry leader in specialized protection against common pests including insects, termites, rodents, and more.

With up to 14 hours of coverage, we didn’t get a single bug bite while outside all day in a grassy area. Stop all kinds of creepy crawlies in their tracks with these 8 bug sprays. Stick one of these small (but mighty) circles in any bird bath, pond, plant tray or flood-prone area up to 100 square feet to kill mosquito larvae for 30 days.

These dishes have a "moat" around the bowl that you can fill with soapy water. It kills insects before they can get to the food or water, but your pet won't make the same mistake. Other types have special rims that can make it more difficult for bugs to climb over.

When branches or leaves are right up against the side of a house, they can act like a bridge, making it easier for insects to access any cracks in the siding or along your windows or doors. If you do find any holes or crevices where the pests can sneak in, act quickly to seal them. While expanding caulk may seem like the ideal solution for this task, it is actually not the best choice. Some pests will be able to gnaw their way through it and let themselves in. Instead, use mortar, copper mesh, sheet metal, or another more impenetrable material, depending on the type of patch you need to make. If necessary, hire a qualified professional to tackle more involved repairs.

If you dust properly, no insect should be able to enter your home without first walking through the dust. It might sound like common sense, but this is one reason many DIY exterminations go poorly. Think like an insect — cover every crack, crevice, and pathway you would take if you were trying to invade your home. If you know where the nest or colony is, apply insecticide directly to that area. This approach gives you the best chance of ending your infestation.

Permethrin is the most odorless and perhaps the least toxic of all the chemical-based bug repellents, but it's also the least effective on bare skin, where it can wear off in as quickly as 15 minutes. On the other hand, it lasts many weeks when applied to clothing — even after several washes — and because it's odorless, it's the ideal bug spray for hunters, anglers, and wildlife stalkers. Refining the choices led to suggested top bug sprays for as many different people and situations as possible. We then looked at ingredients, application, how long they were expected to remain effective, and even the convenience of the container size. While most bug sprays are not expensive, price is always a factor, and these picks maximize value wherever possible. As a seasoned professional in the field of pest control, I understand the convenience of addressing a variety of pests with a single solution. That’s where general-use insecticides come in — versatile formulations that combat various insect species, effectively safeguarding your home from these unwanted invaders. Coleman SkinSmart insect repellent offers up to eight hours of protection, although our real-world experience suggests an effective period of closer to six hours.

But we began our search considering all options, using expert guidance to determine what mattered most when seeking a formula to recommend. Murphy’s Naturals Insect Repellent has perhaps the simplest organic bug spray formula around. It contains 30 percent oil of lemon eucalyptus and 70 percent distilled water mixed with corn ethanol, the latter giving the skin a cooling sensation when applied. It is effective against mosquitoes for up to 6 hours, against deer ticks for 4 hours, and against brown dog and lone star ticks (common in the southern U.S.) for up to 8 hours.

Our emphasis on final is quite purposeful, since the trailer reveals the show’s post-Spacey strategy of killing off Frank. (It’s not a spoiler if the show is promoting that narrative.) We see Claire standing over Frank’s grave throwing figurative and literal shade, almost like a demented Machiavellian reversal of the scene in Forrest Gump at Jenny’s grave. But if you look now, the focus is not on the same kind of films that were made in the 90s. When I look now, the most interesting plots, the most interesting characters, they are on TV.

However, Petrov demands that the activist apologize on Russian television, leading the activist to kill himself while being visited by Claire. Later, after Russian troops are killed in the Jordan Valley, Petrov convinces Frank to remove Claire as Ambassador in exchange for a peaceful resolution. Claire resigns, giving the reason that she wants to be more active in Frank's campaign. Frank Underwood, a power-hungry Democratic congressman from South Carolina and House majority whip, celebrates the 2012 election of President Garrett Walker, who had agreed to appoint him Secretary of State in exchange for his support.

Kate Mara's Zoe Barnes was a major player in the first season of House of Cards when the Washington Herald reporter became the lover/mouthpiece of Frank Underwood. Well, that is until her shocking death at the hands of her former lover in the Season 2 premiere. Since leaving the series, Mara has gone on to star in the panned Fantastic Four, the FX series Pose, and a number of other smaller projects. Mara is set to return to FX for the upcoming drama miniseries A Teacher, in which she will portray a young teacher who gets caught up in an affair with one of her students.

However, Underwood learns that the President wants him to promote his agenda in Congress and will not honor their agreement. Frank's wife Claire runs an NGO, the Clean Water Initiative, which she uses to cultivate her own power; she seeks to expand its scope to the international stage, often using Frank's connections. Claire shares her husband's cold-hearted, ruthless pragmatism and lust for power, and they frequently scheme together to ensure the success of each other's ventures. They both work with Remy Danton, a corporate lobbyist and former Underwood staffer, to secure funds for their operations and expand their influence. Partygoers immediately lined up for a photo op that allowed them to emulate Claire’s pose in the season six key art while a DJ spun ’90s hits — the regal venue and besuited guests an incongruous sight as “I Wanna Sex You Up” blasted through the speakers. Cast members including Wright, Kelly and Zimmer held court by the bar, ignoring their reserved banquettes until the party was well underway.

From lobbyist to the President of the United States, Claire was a driving force which was brought to life by Wright's mastery of the medium. Since the show's shocking finale in 2018, the Golden Globe winner has continued to stay busy with her work in the DC Extended Universe, including the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and the 2021 release of Zack Snyder's Justice League. Wright is also slated to make her directorial debut with Land, a drama in which she also stars, about a grieving attorney who goes off the grid to escape society. It seems like forever ago when Frank and Claire Underwood and the rest of the impressive House of Cards cast were making news for being a part of one of the most controversial and well-made original shows on Netflix. Over the course of the David Fincher-produced show's six-season run, the political drama was home to some of the biggest and brightest stars of the time as well as those who became famous for their portrayals of the Washington, D.C. “We were really excited we could get to an agreement… for the conclusion of the show,” chief content officer Ted Sarandos  told UBS’s Global Media and Communications Conference in New York.

Having filmed the movie before the allegations arose, it ultimately had a detrimental effect on the films commercial ‘success’. In the opening weekend Billionaires Boy Club only made $618 at the box office making it the worst opening of Spacey’s career. Spacey was cut from the film All the Money in the World, and his role as John Paul Getty was instead played by Christopher Plummer. Since the end of House of Cards, Catherine Durrant has starred in another Political drama, Madam Secretary. The actress currently has a role in the NBC drama Bluff City Law, playing the role of Della Bedford.

House of the Dragon reveals the first new season 2 cast members

Doug leaks information about Dunbar's secret meeting with Lucas and forces her to suspend her campaign. Frank recovers and resumes his position as president, agreeing to put Claire on the ticket for the upcoming election. “The two share a vision for the future of America, as well as a complicated past with the Underwoods,” explains Netflix.

Ali’s second Oscar would come two years later for his work on the film Green Book as Don Shirley, a second win for the category of Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Sebastian Arcelus' portrayal of reporter Lucas Goodwin will probably go down as one of the most traumatizing and unforgettable descents into madness featured on the show. In trying to find dirt and take down Frank Underwood, Goodwin's life (professional and personal) continues to get worse and worse until its tragic ending. Following his departure from House of Cards, Arcelus found moderate success on television shows like Madame Secretary, The Leftovers, and most recently, small roles on FBI and Bull. One of the most notable facts about Arcelus is that, due to him being a descendant of Sophia of Hanover, he is in the line of succession to the British throne, though he is pretty far down the list.

← Back to season

Eventually, the leaker makes a voice-modulated call to Hammerschmidt, implicating Doug in Zoe's murder. The Underwoods convince Doug to take the fall for killing Zoe, and the leaker is revealed to be Frank himself. The leaks are revealed to be part of Frank's master plan to resign the presidency to Claire, believing his thirst for power can be better achieved in the private sector, working alongside his wife's presidency. Frank, concerned about Secretary Durant's intention to testify at the impeachment hearing, pushes her down a short flight of stairs upon accepting her resignation, hospitalizing her.

Wishing to avoid public disclosure of his personal issues, Walker has the White House Counsel coach the counselor, which the special prosecutor interprets as witness tampering. As the House Judiciary Committee begins drafting articles of impeachment, both Walker and Frank offer Tusk a presidential pardon in exchange for implicating the other. Tusk sides with Walker at first, leaving Frank no other option than to regain the president's trust as a friend. With Walker forced to resign, Frank is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. After Frank begins his vice presidential duties, Claire becomes close with the First Lady and learns Walker's marriage is strained. He meets Xander Feng, a Chinese businessman and ally of Tusk's, to engage in back-channel negotiations that Frank intentionally scuttles at the expense of Tusk's credibility.

Yates reads Frank a prologue that he does not understand at first, but agrees is a decent beginning. By the end of the season, Yates has the first chapter written and Frank, not liking the direction the book is taking, fires Yates. By the season finale, tensions between the Underwoods reach a point where Claire states her intent to leave Frank. Six months into his presidency, Frank pushes for a controversial jobs program called America Works. Determined not to be a "placeholder" President, Underwood reverses his previous pledge and runs in the 2016 election, competing against Heather Dunbar in the Democratic primaries. Frank manipulates Walker into volunteering his travel records, which reveal his visits to a marriage counselor and raise questions about whether the donations were discussed.

In the weeks before the 2016 election, Frank uses ICO as a pretext to enacting martial law in urban areas and consolidating polling places in key states. Done mainly through back channels with Democratic governors, this is officially done in the name of safety, but in practice disenfranchises rural Republican voters. To keep the strategy of fear going, Doug blackmails hacker Aidan Macallan into launching a massive cyberattack on the NSA, slowing down Internet traffic and wiping out hundreds of thousands of files. Underwood's political machine stages a terrorist attack in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is pinned on a local suspected ICO sympathizer. With Pennsylvania secured by Conway and Ohio seeming to swing his way, Frank unofficially calls Conway directly to concede.

As this was a few years before Kevin Spacey announced his sexuality in the wake of the allegations against him, the scene is even more eye-opening with what we know about the actor today. Kate Mara spent the least amount of time on House of Cards but like Rachel Brosnahan, her role was hugely impactful on the story. She was murdered by Frank Underwood in the second season, but would later reappear, alongside Pete Russo, to haunt Frank during a hallucination, heavily signifying that the President feels guilt for his roles in their deaths. Seven years ago on February 1st, 2013, Netflix changed the future of streaming forever when it released its first original series, House of Cards. The streaming service has come a long way since 2013, with over a 1000 more Originals have been developed since.

However, this is merely a tactic to put Conway off guard, as the Underwoods contact Ohio's governor and convince him to close the polls early on the pretense of a terrorist threat. Ohio and Tennessee refuse to certify the election, and neither candidate reaches the requisite number of electoral votes. The incumbent, Doris Jones, plans to retire and endorse her daughter Celia as her successor. Claire offers them federal funding for a key Planned Parenthood clinic in exchange for stepping down, but they refuse the offer.

Janine Skorsky and Doug continue to work to uncover the Underwoods, with Doug leaking contents of Frank's secret audio diary while Claire blames everything on Frank. Claire then uses the pretense of ICO obtaining a nuclear weapon to create a crisis, leading the Shepherds and Doug to accelerate their plans. After sending a copy of Frank's audio and letter opener to Claire, Doug visits her in the Oval Office where he admits that he killed Frank because he was undermining his own legacy.

The room gradually filled up so much that waiters with passed apps (flatbread, chicken, sliders, avocado and tomato toast) couldn’t make it more than 5 feet past the kitchen entrance. You may recognise McGiver from Jimmy Fallon’s dreadful 2004 remake of Taxi or from guest starring roles on Boardwalk Empire and The Wire. Kelly had a major guest starring role in The Soprano’s and appeared alongside House of Cards co-star Robin Wright in M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable. Jayne Atkinson played a key role as Catherine Durrant in Frank Underwood’s rise to the top of his political career. Despite surviving Frank pushing her down the stairs, it would be Claire that put the nail in the former Secretary of State coffin. Despite her attempt to flee to the French Alps, an assassin, hired by Claire, shot and killed her.

Annette, now strained from Bill, plots with Usher, no longer Vice President, to assassinate Claire. She asks Doug to perpetrate the act, but he is reluctant, mainly desiring to protect Frank's legacy. Claire, through now-Speaker Cole, blackmails Justice Abruzzo into recusing himself in a case dealing with her power to launch nuclear weapons.

The most polarising and controversial cast members of them all, Kevin Spacey’s fall from grace has been nothing short of dramatic. Several allegations of sexual misconduct lead to Spacey leaving the role of Frank Underwood, which ultimately lead to the character dying off-screen. Darrow starred in a second Original series, Godless playing the role of Webster, a Pinkerton.

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time. While most of the details about the duo’s characters have yet to be revealed, it is said that they will play siblings, an idea that could lead to anything when put through the lens of the show’s dark Machiavellian power-seeking themes. With Netflix’s reveal of the release date comes the first official poster for the final season, evoking imagery from the show’s Season 1 poster, which depicted Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood sitting on the Lincoln memorial’s throne-like chair.

Tom Hammerschmidt, Zoe and Lucas's former news editor, digs deeper into the latter's claims of Frank's misdeeds. Tom also meets with Walker, convincing him to help by appealing to his anger for being forced to resign. Remy Danton and Jackie Sharp also decide to go on the record against Frank to lend credibility to the story. An American family is kidnapped in Tennessee by two supporters of a radical Islamist group called the Islamic Caliphate Organization (ICO), who agree to negotiate only with the ambitious Republican nominee, Governor Will Conway. Frank invites Conway to the White House to assist in the negotiations as a publicity stunt, and Conway helps buy critical time in locating the suspects. However, tensions between the Conways and Underwoods lead to the governor ending his role in the crisis.

Doug threatens and wounds Claire with the letter opener, but when he draws back, she grabs it and stabs him in the stomach. As he lies bleeding on the floor, she covers his mouth and suffocates him, completely unaware that, thanks to Doug, journalist Janine Skorsky is going to expose her crimes. The Shepherds decide to influence Claire by other means, including through a Supreme Court justice they convince her to nominate. They and Seth Grayson also develop a mobile application which can secretly be used to monitor the user's activity, including their location. Secretary of State Durant also comes within the Shepherds' sphere of influence, and they persuade her to speak with prosecutors investigating the Underwoods as the Shepherds become increasingly distant from Claire.

An Introduction to the Fundamentals of Cohort and Case Control Studies PMC

case control design

Potential confounders should usually be measured before entry into the cohort, to avoid adjustment for factors in the causal pathway. In a case–control study, the odds ratio is the usual measure of association reported. This measure is the ratio of the odds of an exposure between cases and controls and in most cases approximates the relative risk. As in a cohort study, the analytic plan for a case–control study typically involves advanced statistical methods to adjust for multiple potential confounders.

Frequently asked questions

Thus, some participants have the outcome of interest (referred to as cases), whereas others do not have the outcome of interest (referred to as controls). Thus, by design, in a case-control study the outcome has to occur in some of the participants that have been included in the study. Case-control studies, in contrast, require both a case group and a control group, as suggested by their name, and usually are used to identify risk factors for a disease by comparing cases and controls.

Study of Intended Drug Effects

Another use for case-control studies is investigating risk factors for a rare disease, such as uveal melanoma. Patients who present to hospital, however, may not be representative of the population who get melanoma. If, for example, women present less commonly at hospital, bias might occur in the selection of cases. (For identification of a conditional risk ratio, see Theorem 2 of Supplementary Appendix B.) Case-base sampling, also known as case-cohort sampling, means that no individual who is at risk at baseline of sustaining the event of interest is precluded from selection as a control.

When to use a case-control study

case control design

As observational studies, they can suggest associations between an exposure and a disease, but they cannot prove without a doubt that the exposure causes the disease. In particular, issues arising from timing, research biases like recall bias, and the selection of variables lead to low internal validity and the inability to determine causality. The strength of the association between an exposure and a disease in a case-control study can be measured using a few different statistical measures, such as odds ratios (ORs) and relative risk (RR). Is not identifiable from the available data distribution under the stated assumptions (see remark to Theorem 3, Supplementary Appendix B). However, approximate identifiability can be achieved by invoking the rare event assumption (or rare disease assumption), in which case the marginal odds ratio approximates the marginal risk ratio.

Additionally, cohort studies in general are more longitudinal in nature and do not necessarily require a control group. Standing out for its portability, the DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel is roughly the size of a keyboard. This panel packs a punch with high-quality trackballs and machined knobs for precise control over color correction. Whether you’re adjusting shadows, highlights, or saturation, the tactile feedback provided by these controls allows for nuanced fine-tuning. We specifically studied two causal contrasts (i.e., pairs of interventions), one corresponding to intention-to-treat effects and the other to always-versus-never per-protocol effects of a time-varying exposure.

Past Events

Selecting only hospital-based cases may lead to systematic error related to hospital admission practices, whereby exposed cases may be more likely to be admitted and therefore selected into the study (a phenomenon known as Berksonian bias). Furthermore, only new (incident) cases should be selected, as nonincident cases usually over-represent long-term survivors, and diagnostic practices may change over time, introducing potential bias. When cases are selected from a secondary data source, the case definitions should be supported by previous validation studies. The most commonly cited disadvantage in case-control studies is the potential for recall bias.

Impact on longevity and public health

This type of design is useful for rare outcomes and those with long latent periods. However, they may also be prone to certain biases – selection bias and recall bias. This paper gives a formal account of how and when causal effects can be identified in case-control studies and, as such, underpins the case-control application of Dickerman et al. [3]. Like Dickerman et al., we believe that case-control studies should generally be regarded as being nested within cohort studies.

Selection as a control, S, is further assumed independent of baseline covariate L0 and exposure A0. Selecting controls from survivors only (e.g., rows 4, 5, 7 and 9 in Fig. 1) violates this assumption when survival depends on L0 or A0. The utility of the case-control studies includes answering epidemiological questions for risk factor identification as well as providing data on therapeutic effectiveness. The strength of case-control studies is dependent on well thought out clinical questions and quality study design. When used appropriately, findings can make important contributions to the literature that address causation or determine or refine treatment algorithms.

Similarly, if all of the cases of Kaposi's sarcoma were found to come from a small community outside a battery factory with high levels of lead in the environment, then controls from across the country with minimal lead exposure would not provide an appropriate control group. The investigator must put a great deal of effort into creating a proper control group to bolster the strength of the case-control study as well as enhance their ability to find true and valid potential correlations between exposures and disease states. If, for example, our cases of Kaposi's sarcoma came from across the country but our controls were only chosen from a small community in northern latitudes where people rarely go outside or get sunburns, asking about sunburn may not be a valid exposure to investigate. Similarly, if all of the cases of Kaposi's sarcoma were found to come from a small community outside a battery factory with high levels of lead in the environment, then controls from across the country with minimal lead exposure would not provide an appropriate control group.

In such circumstances, as in quasi-controlled studies,9 there is bound to be confounding. The other reason is that, in case-control studies, data areusually drawn from medical records or databases. Information extracted from such sources isvery unlikely to have been collected and recorded with the expectation of use in futureresearch. When the sample size is large, it becomes easier to see a signalthrough the noise. The main issues of concern with a case-control study are recall bias, its retrospective nature, the need for a careful collection of measured variables, and the selection of an appropriate control group.[3] These are discussed above in the disadvantages section.

Careful consideration of time intervals in the design of the conceptual target trial and of the actual cohort or case-control study is therefore warranted. Table 1 summarises a number of identification results for case-control studies without matching. Each result consists of one of the three aforementioned sampling schemes, an estimand, a set of assumptions, and an identification strategy. Under the conditions of the “Sampling scheme” and “Assumptions” columns, an identifying functional of the estimand of the “Estimand” column is obtained by following the steps of the “Identification strategy” column. An estimand is said to be identifiable if the distribution of the available data is compatible with exactly one value of the estimand, or therefore, if the estimand can be expressed as a functional of the available data distribution.

The authors present a nice overview of what case control studies truly are, highlighting some of their advantages and their limitations. Although the use of true case-control studies in neurosurgery has, to date, been somewhat limited, the methodology holds substantial potential for answering important questions in our field. In a longitudinal study, researchers monitor a population over an extended period of time, and they can be used to study developmental shifts and understand how certain things change as we age.

This view emphasises that the threats to the validity of cohort studies should also be considered in case-control studies. For example, in case-control applications with risk-set sampling, researchers often consider the covariate and exposure status only at, or just before, the time of the event (for cases) or the time of sampling (for controls). However, where a cohort study would require information on baseline levels or the complete treatment and covariate history of participants, one should suspect that this holds for the nested case-control study too.

A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance. Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO.

Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting.

Icehouse Canyon is located in a beautiful stretch of the Angeles National Forest near Mount Baldy Village, just southeast of the mighty Mount Baldy. At 7,500 feet, this low point in the ridgeline offers sweeping views of the western San Gabriel Mountains. From the saddle, hikers and backpackers may continue on in several directions to explore nearby peaks and venture deeper into the Cucamonga Wilderness. The single-track to Icehouse Saddle climbs 2,600 feet over 3.6 miles and is an exceptional hike.

Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile.

Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home. In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. Packaged ice is also available for emergencies, such as natural disasters, heat waves or power outages.

Incense Cedars and firs become the dominant arbors, and 0.8 miles past the junction, the trail crosses a sign marking the boundary of the Cucamonga Wilderness. This is the halfway point by mileage, but in some ways, the hike is just beginning. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper.

The trail passes these current and past dwellings, ascending gradually into a wilderness with less and less human impact. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. “I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape.

The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12.

“I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. Departing from the parking lot along Icehouse Canyon Road, the trail takes course along the northern bank of a creek that flows down the canyon. Crystal clear water tumbles past oaks and sycamores, and this is a fine venue for a directionless romp through nature for those disinterested in following the trail. A half-dozen cabins are spread out along the bottom of the canyon, along with another half-dozen stone foundations (ruins left over from the early days of the Angeles).

In addition to the trail camps, backpackers may set up camp anywhere they wish in the wilderness as long as the spot is 200 feet from creeks and lakes. Above the snow-covered waterfall, the trail becomes more generous again and there is only one more steep passage over the last third-mile. These tracks are barely visible under the deep snow, and only one trail sign is visible. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

A black-and-white triangular mosaic tile floor by Artistic Tile from Mission Tile West puts a contemporary twist on the classic checkered pattern. Normally, the trail crosses to the north side of the canyon and climbs a series of switchbacks to get to Icehouse Saddle. However, when that white thing that is usually foreign to Southern California covers the ground, the consensus becomes to take a direct track right up the center of the canyon. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting.

“I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor.

Poncho sledding, as it could be called, adds even more enjoyment to this winter hike. Not long after crossing into the Cucamonga Wilderness, the trail begins to climb more seriously. Your heart starts to pound and your thighs start to burn… and then you hit the real steep section, an arduous march up a slippery slope called “the waterfall.” Have a look around for inspiration.

Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents.

Responsive websites are typically far more cost-effective than a dedicated mobile site. SiteBuilder, uKit, and Site123 don’t allow you to preview their templates or view example client sites. Like Wix, Pagecloud automatically generates layouts based on your needs, but it also lets you manually adjust the layout on a pixel-exact level. Wix doesn’t allow for editing a website’s style sheet (CSS files) and doesn’t provide deeper access to the HTML behind the page or FTP access to the files. There is a Dev Mode, however, called Velo, which lets you paste code into the site, add JavaScript, or connect your site to external APIs.
